Brendan “BushBaron” Buckley…. Shrub Shreddin’

Brendan "BushBaron" Buckley.... Shrub Shreddin'

There comes a time, when the tide is just not right, and there is an incredible itch for radicalness that just MUST be scratched, that you simply need to kick the fins off your favorite Murder Machine and head for the hills for a little bit of ShrubShreddin’!! Luckily, we happened to run into one of the planets premier Freestyle Foliage experts Brendan “BushBaron” Buckley, and witness what we can only describe as an indescribable session of his shrub shredding prowess. Believe me ladies and gentlemen, this kid knows a lot about bush….

(notice the bush photographer)

He took us on a 16 mile hike, barefoot mind you, to one of his top secret spots….

To illustrate the level of gnar possessed by the BushBaron, this is how he warms up, by charging down this monstrous and potentially deadly BEAST of a dirt wave. This is like the Waimea of this discipline folks…

Being the absolute, hands down BEST at what you do does not come free; the current consensus is that there are already a total of 665 gallons of the BushBaron’s blood in these hills. Here, he is adding the last drips to gallon 666….

The BB don’t mess around with weak ass chop hops in the water. He sure as hell won’t be bustin’ no jive ass crop hops in the bush….

Being a world class Hedge Hunter, an accomplished Slave Raver, an orthopedic surgeon, and regular volunteer at the O’Reily Institute for Diarrhea Research doesn’t take away from what the Bush Baron is at the core,……a Patriot.

The man has one simple dream, to jump off the edge of the world, into the universe’s biggest and baddest bush, wherever that may be. Maybe it is where the horizon lies, maybe it can only be found within. Whichever path he decides to take, the Baron of Bush will remain a legend, and myth amongst men….Viva el Pinche Baron

Clay Marzo talks to the camera

The fine folks at Vestal did this little number with their surf destroyer, Clay Marzo. Clay is an up and coming phenom in surfing and is actually one of my favorite surfers to watch right now. How is he in front of a camera? Pretty classic.

Kelly Slater Seshn at Lower Trestles

Surfing’s great ambassador Kelly Slater stopped for a few shots with a couple of stoked local groms down at Lower Trestles the other day. Could this guy get any better for the sport of surfing? Honestly, what Kelly has done has been out of this world and it’s sad to think that he is getting older and won’t be the “same Kelly” for too much longer. Regardless, Slater is the man and if you think he is whack, you really have issues to deal with.
Here are some shots from Kelly’s seshn:

Huge Factor 54 Update

Our friends at Factor 54 just set the hounds loose with a massive upload on their blog. F54 is wasting no time at all getting right into summer by showing up at the Gnarly Charlie Grom Surf Series on Jax Beach in Florida. They have posted some rad stuff and great photos of the event, so check them out.

Factor’s very own Ted Wueste chilled out with Nate Sherwood for an interview that puts almost every other interview (with the exception of our own interviews we conduct here at Seshn) to shame. F54 put Nate in charge of Skateboarding and from what we hear, he is kicking some ass as expected.
Be sure to keep checking out the F54 blog on the daily or get email updates by clicking here

Bruce Irons Calls Contest Surfing Quits, Goes Back to Freesurfing

“I am going back to being a freesurfer, it’s what I was meant to do.”  - Bruce Irons
Bruce Irons is going back to the stream he came from and it’s about time. After four and a half years of tough losses, Bruce is set to go back to his roots. This is good news for everyone as it really gives Bruce a chance to be creative again and shine in the light that he needs to be in.
Bruce is now 28 years old and admits that he has some regrets about surfing in the tour. Of course there were a few good times along the way like when he finished second to his brother Andy Irons, in the 2004 Quik Pro in Hossegor but it seemed like the bad times outweighed the good in this situation.
Irons will be finishing up the tour this year as he is loyal to his commitments but after that, it’s over and he will be “free” again once more. Best of luck to you Bruce and we can’t wait to see your progression in free surfing over the next few years!

Chris Cote UNIV Surfboard Project

Could UNIV and Chris CoteTransworld Surf’s animated editor in chief, be the perfect recipe for a surfboard collabo? UNIV seems to think so and they teamed up with Cote to create an awesome artsy surfboard to stimulate your steez.

This sounds like a win-win to me as UNIV gets to team up with a living legend in Chris Cote, and at the same time they get some play in Transworld Surf as Transworld is planning on doing a feature on the surfboard very soon. On the other hand, UNIV gets a great board to sell in their shop to drive sales.
The surfboard is a four-fin double-ender, meaning it can be ridden both forward and backwards with ease.  Oh and did I mention it features all kinds of random weapons and things?

Stay tuned to Transworld Surf Magazine to get the latest scoop on this rad-looking board.

Mick Fanning & REEF - Cheek To Cheek?

Mick Fanning & REEF - Cheek To Cheek?

I note that surfing supernova Mick Fanning has signed with REEF for another 5 years of backslapping and mutual profit. “The relationship with Mick and Reef must continue” said REEF manager, Heath “Nutty” Walker in a voice that I imagined - completely without foundation, I admit - sounded like Dr.Strangelove. So expect a lot of sandals then. The next flip flop is “top secret and set to release Spring 2009″. Top secret?
The last lot had a bottle opener in the heel (grips dog shite harder than a sumo) - what the feck are they gonna stick in the new one? A GPS system that plots your course from bar to bar? Why break with tradition, I say?
Earlier we had the REEF Dram Sandal marketed by one retailer with refreshing candour thus: “Not content to simply open alcoholic beverages, the Dram includes a polyurethane encapsulated flask in the heel, good for smuggling liquor into pretty much any event you can think of.” Much loved by the underage drinker and college student majoring in alcoholism, US retail giant Nordstrom pulled it from the shelves - spoilsports. So go on REEF - give us a sandal with a cubby hole for coke. If you don’t, I will - and you’ll see Beach Bum’s Ganja Guttees hitting the stores sometime soon.
NB: This is not a picture of Mick Fanning’s arse. Unlike the REEF girls, it’s not easy finding a pic of Mick in a thong.

Surfing with the Dolphins

Sometimes you just get those perfect moments when surfing… You may never get your ‘perfect moment’ or you may get lucky and have a few throughout your lifetime. I think it’s safe to say that Keith Bass got his by surfing with dolphins on friday.

These shots were taken by Jerrod Mills at Port Aransas last friday. According to Jerrod, the dolphin bumped Keith’s board as it flew out of the water. Stoked!

Megan Abubo

Megan Abubo is a killer surfer who’s been on the ASP tour since she was 17. Besides being able to rip through waves better than most of the boys, she’s an inspiration to those who know her and girls who love to surf everywhere. Beyond that she’s a spokesperson for Keep-A-Breast, a breast cancer charity that raises awareness and money for breast cancer research. She’s also appeared in the movie Blue Crush as a stunt double, and as herself, as well as being featured in a spread in Rolling Stone magazine.
Last year we designed and launched her new website. She needed a new site that reflected her style.

When You Cross An Ulsterman With An Hawaiian...

…you get an Orangeman in a grass skirt? No, you get George Freeth, often billed as the “first surfer in the United States”. Apparently, Georgie’s old man hailed from Ulster (one of the four Irish provinces having six of its nine counties now in Northern Ireland) and fell for a Wahine after he emigrated to Hawaii. The offspring of their loins turned out to be a rather interesting dude. As inscribed on a memorial statue at Redondo beach in California…
“George Freeth was born in Honolulu November 8, 1883 of Hawaiian and Irish ancestry. As a youngster he revived the lost Polynesian art of surfing while standing on a board. Henry E. Huntington was amazed at Freeth’s surfing and swimming abilities and induced George to come to Redondo beach in 1907 to help the building of “the largest, warm saltwater plunge in the world.”
George Freeth was advertised as “the man who can walk on water.” Thousands of people came here on the big red cars to watch this astounding feat. George would mount his big 8-foot long, solid wood , 200 hundred pound surf board far out in the surf. He would wait for a suitable wave, catch it, and to the amazement of all, ride onto the beach while standing upright.
George Freeth introduced the game of water polo to this coast. He trained many champion swimmers and divers. George was the “first official lifeguard” on the Pacific coast. He invented the torpedo shaped rescue buoy that is now used worldwide. On December 16, 1908 during a violent south bay storm, George rescued 6 Japanese fisherman from a capsized boat. For his valour he received “the United States Lifesaving Corps gold medal.”
George Freeth died April 7, 1919 at the early age of 35 years as the result of exhaustion from strenuous rescue work.”

IPath To Join The Surf Game?

Ipath claims they are entering the surf game today by the creation of a new surf team. This is no joke, you can check out the press release here. Ipath which is known by everyone as a skateboarding company, plans on making a big impact in the surf world as they add pro surfers Nick Jiampa, Pat Millin, Ben McBrien, Rob Wurlitzer and Will Skudin.
This is very interesting as we are seeing more and more companies getting into different sports. We are seeing snow companies buyout surf companies and skate companies, and we are seeing skate companies getting into surfing….. What’s next? Skateboarders starting inline skate brands?

This is Jeff Myers, Mike Schirmer and Justin Shub making the most of a fun headhigh swell last April. Looking at these shots makes me can’t wait to get back shooting on the beach and getting some nice waves again on my favorite beaches of the OBX after being stuck in a cubicle all winter. I am not telling you where it is, and its not too hard to find. Just follow the cars parked off the side of the road down south of whalebone junction. Oh and another thing, make sure you don’t get stuck in the sand…..that is unless you got a 4×4. Enjoy.

Rip Curl Pro Update: Dane Reynolds is kicking some ass!

With so much hype around the Kelly Slater story, people have taken their attention off some of the other smaller-name guys competing as well. One of them being, 22 year old Dane Reynolds. Reynolds was boosting 9’s all day and his highest wave score came it at a 9.73 out of 10! That was the highest of the day.
Dane had this to say about the 9.73 score, “That (9.73) was just a perfect clean face,” Reynolds said. “I would have had to really blow it to not get a score. I basically connected the dots, I didn’t do anything too ridiculous, but that is all it took.”
Dane will be up against CJ Hobgood in round 3… Stay tuned for coverage soon here on Seshn. In the meantime, check out the rest of the scores and round 3’s matchups:

Kelly then got online and noticed how bummed people were and in his own words, he had this to say about the situation, ”A combination of things influenced my decision to come to Bells. I had called ASP Tour Manager Renato Hickel to ask to be officially taken out of the event and that is when he asked me if I had seen the swell forecast.”

    ASP World Tour, Quik Pro

The ASP World Tour first event of the 2008 season has wrapped up on the Gold Coast of Australia. The Quik Pro saw a sketchy start with days of flatness and the contest on hold for many days of the event. As some may know, the first round of an event on the WCT sends the 2nd and 3rd place surfers to the second round, while the 1st place surfer is sent to the third round automatically. Then the surfers have to duke it out in the fourth round, quarter final, and semi final, hoping to make it to the final, which holds $30,000 for first place, and $16,000 for second. The semi final of the Quik Pro saw the first heat with Bede Durbidge and Mick Fanning, both Australian locals. It was an extremely close heat with Bede finishing second with a total of 16.67 points, and Mick Fanning winning the heat with a 17.23. The second heat of the semi finals held Jeremy Flores against Kelly Slater, 8 time world champion. Good Morning Pluto

Just got all the info about the newest ad campaign from the INSIGHT folks and as promised in my earlier post, here’s a taste:

“With the help of his brother George, ::Insight’s marketing creative director Steve Gorrow packed up and shipped out to Bali to “make a ghetto submarine and take it on a magical surfing safari”. Together the two brothers embarked on and conquered the massive feat of building on land and beneath the sea. No easy task - water and sand are a bitch to deal with, they always complain, storm off into the horizon muttering something about “this wasn’t in my contract”. But Steve’s savvy, and pulled in the help of Aquaman; a bonafide ‘wave whisperer’, a man with gills who spent his days hanging on the ocean floor helping put Steve’s vision into place (and loosing a fin or two in the process). The results are a wave of wondrous new images (thanks to Dustin Humphrey) of what the ::Insight surfers uncovered when the graffiti trashed submarine launched - ocean dinner parties, terror spikes, alientoon eggs, Malia Jones in a bikini traveling on a giant lobster and a crazy bunny in an underwater cinema.
Welcome to ::Insight’s newest surf campaign”
