Activision, producer of the Tony Hawk skateboarding series, is toying with the idea of using a motion skateboard-like motion-sensitive controller for the next 360/PS3/PC game.
That’s right, Tony Hawk is really pushing the envelope, trying to gain momentum against a major competitor in the skateboarding video game market. Remember EA’s Skate? Tons of people jumped shipped for the more simulation style skateboarding game, that was backed by a lot of skateboarders that were no longer relevant in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater universe. With Proving Ground not exactly selling as many titles as the previous games in the series, The Birdman went back to Activision with a new plan.
We are now seeing that the new plan apparently might include a real motion sensitive device that will let you skateboard in real time. This seems like a perfect fit for the Wii, but I’m not sure if they can get this motion thing down and still be good.
If you’re a skateboarder, you know that there is some skill involved with skateboarding’s even most simple of movies. If this new game is really going to break ground, they are going to have to make an ollie easier than the real thing, which will then make a lot of fat kids king of video game skateboarding, rather than skateboarding for reals.
Which makes me a little skeptical about this new height of skateboarding popularity. Sure, we have a lot of couch skateboarders, but this is going to bring in a new era of skateboarding, which we are experiencing mildly right now, where people that do not skateboard at all, are still buying skateboarding products, boards, and trying to “fit in”.
I remember the first time that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was released. The same thing was said about the game. I remember thinking the same thing I am thinking now about this latest news, but then again, I still got off the couch and I still skated. So maybe this isn’t going to do a whole lot more than what happened with me.
Who knows?
