Mexico for vaca

Femke, her man, AJ, and her folks from New Zealand went to the Yucatan for ten days to hang out with some tropical critters and climb old Myan ruins. And on that note…did anyone see the new Indiana Jones flick? Let us know what you think…
The Tulum ruins also had the biggest Iguanas ever

Critter

Climbing old things

So there may have been some high-kicking going on…yeah, with masks on

And some cutecouples

Some snorkeling happened. I wish it was that warm in SF!

More critters. If you happen to see any pink flamingos, you know, the plastic kind that goes on your grandma’s lawn, hold on to it. It’s now vintage.

The last day was sailing with her dad and AJ. Good visit, good trip, good times. Here’s one for vacations!

Texas Skyline

Mimi Knoop flew down to Houston for the Grand Opening of the Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark on June 1st. It was hot, sticky, Houston sweaty but that didn’t stop the crowds from rushing in. The place was packed according to Mimi. The Vans team, Independent team and the slick movin’ multi-extreme sport talented Shawn White were in addition to the mass of locals that came to celebrate the opening.
There was some autograph signing

The Boost Mobil crew was there

The crowd was thick

A teeny, tiny glimpse of the park

Girl Skateboards Beauty and The Beast Tour Round Up

Girl Skateboards just came through the Northwest on the Beauty and The Beast tour and here are all the links you could possibly want to see or read. There are videos, photos, and all sorts of media from this highly publicized event. I actually missed the tour, due to previous engagements, but heard that all that went down was just insane, and I’m sure the footage will be collected for a Girl Skateboards dvd down the road.

Ah yes, Hawaii, land of beauty and pork. Not exactly what you would think of first when thinking about Hawaii, but I love their pork down there. I went once, and had an all you can eat experience that has never been matched since. I could have closed the place down, but I was so full….and well….nevermind. Here’s a video of the DC skate crew hitting Hawaii; those lucky dudes.

Crystal Castles “Crystal Castles”

Crystal Castles “Crystal Castles”

Crystal Castles
Self-titled
Last Gang Records
You may know Crystal Castles by their packed live shows, which blend rave, old school videogame sound effects, and a disco backbeat. Crystal Castles’ self titled 2008 release, the duo’s first on Last Gang Records, captures the essence of He-Man and Donkey Kong Jr. throwing fireballs at each other in Bowser Castle. Mixing Mario-esque musical samples and a microphone, Crystal Castles displays the talent of Toronto team Ethan Fawn and Alice Glass. Glass’ vocals draw from a diverse number of styles including punk, hip-hop, and noise, while Fawn’s keyboard sounds like it has an arcade machine chip inside it. Named after the fortress in the sky in which She-Ra, The Princess of Power dwells, Crystal Castles conjures a world of 8-bit videogames, eighties synth-pop, and sword-wielding cartoon characters with muscular figures wearing only their underwear. The only problem I have with the lyrics is that they are largely unintelligible, and the only resemblance to a theme is hinted in each song’s title. Still, the vocals remain beautiful, and the album packs an abstract intensity only matched by the combo of He-Man and She-Ra themselves in a tag team battle against the Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong. – Jonathan Mendick, Mannerist Zine

Any Angle Trailer

The East Coast is buzzing with skateboarding action, and a lot of people don’t realize that it’s happening. On the West Coast, the media magazines seem to rule and boarding companies put in a lot of money to promote skateboarding in sunny weather. But don’t sleep on the east, here’s a promo for a home brewed skateboarding video.

New Skurniture from Robust Flavor

Skateboard furniture seems like it has been popping up all over online and in the mags over the passed 5 years but I have yet to see anything this original. Robust Flavor has some new ‘Skurniture’ and it’s quite unique in the sense that anyone can use and deck they have lying around to make themselves a chair. All you do is purchase the legs and they will screw into any regular sized skateboard deck. It’s pretty genius, get some!

Chicken & Tea Event

So we all know that the English love their tea time. Well, I can’t deny that I like tea time myself. What makes the UK different? They name an event after their favorite time of day. The Gnar Chicken & Tea Snowboard Event is coming to the Tamworth Snowdome on May 31st.
Here’s a little info about the event from Michelle who is one of the lovely Nikita Euros. We heart us our Euro babes!
“Gnar Chicken was created from a love of snowboarding and a unified vision of the future of women’s snowboarding. This year’s event will celebrate the progression of women’s snowboarding, be a great chance to spot new talent within the UK by uniting up-and-coming riders with those more familiar on the scene in a fun slopestyle event. The slope layout is set (see attached) and Nikita have provided some amazing prizes which will be distrubuted for everyone at every level to win….“not just for those that ride the best all the time. It is after all about progression!” - Alexa Hohenberg (organiser)

The Time Table for the Night Is:

7.00pm - Meet at the bar
8.00pm - Drinks in the Bar and the Premier of ‘Freezing Level’: a movie about the environment and snowboarding by Euan Southcott. Filmed in Folgefonna Norway, Scotland, 2alps and many more shrinking snow locations.
10.00pm - The Gnar Chicken Jam begins on the slope
11.30pm - Half-time groom and break in the bar
12.00am - The second half of the Gnar Chicken Jam begins
1.30am - End of Gnar Chicken Jam …..Prize Giving on the Slope
2.00am onwards - After Party at the Tamworth Travelodge

Special Nikita “This Girl Loves to Ride” Award
They will be filming on the night and taking photos. All photos and pod-casts will be available through www.gnarchickenandtea.co.uk, where you can also check out further info….”
Now that sounds like it’s gonna be hard to wake up the next morning… So if you’re in England on the 31st go check it out!
