Filmers and Photographers Getting Recognized?

Posted on by Gage | +Add a Comment »

Looking through magazines and watching skateboarding videos are awesome right?  Well, none of it would exist with out the people that are recognized in the little font on the photo or at the ending credits.  Recently, The Skateboard Mag has created some videos where the filmer/photographer goes over some past experiences and memories while working in the field.  Here is a photographer and filmer as they share their past experiences while working for The Skateboard Mag.  Enjoy!

Burton Roof Top Halfpipe in Melrose

Burton loves skateboarding. To prove it, they bought Alien Workshop. Well they have now gone one step further in proving they are a legit skate company by constructing a halfpipe on the roof top of the Burton store in Melrose.

Better hope you are connected though, there will be very limited access for roof-top seshn’s. From what we hear, only Burton employees and pros will be destroying the roof. Construction of the halfpipe began on monday and will be complete tonight.

Sector 9 sells to Billabong

Posted on by smallakin | +Add a Comment »

Billabong officially announced that they have acquired the Sector 9 company and along with it, Gullwing trucks. Although there is much speculation on the purchase price, the overall sentiment is a little bit shocked.  Some are shouting ’sellout’ while others are stoked for the boost the longboarding industry will get from the much more substantial financial backing.

One thing is for certain that Sector 9 boards will soon be everywhere (not that they weren’t already).  There’s no word yet on whether the Gullwing trucks switchover will have an effect on Dregs or Arbor.  However, as part of the deal, co-founders Steve Lake and Dennis Telfer and co-owner Dave Klimkiewicz are supposed to be sticking around in their current jobs, therefore, I doubt anyone should be worried about losing the original vision and creativity that Sector 9 brought to their field.

Meho Plaza “Self-titled”

Meho Plaza
Self-titled
Better Looking Records

Meho Plaza’s recent self-titled album mixes a pop aesthetic with electronic punk noise. The trio, which consists of keyboardist Jennifer Hwang, drummer James Connely, and vocalist/guitarist Mike Thrasher, has garnered significant press by such reputable organizations as the Los Angeles Times and Pitchfork Media. Tracks like “I Sold My Organs”, “Lets Play Police”, “The Beach”, and “George Washington” all contain manic catchy guitar riffs, and a danceable backbeat. Interspersed at random are four or five songs out of the eleven that make me want to scratch out my eyes out. Perhaps the poppy half appeals to the people who have never heard Meho Plaza, and the five tracks of experimental synth-driven madness appeal to hardcore fans and live show attendees. Whoever the audience is, the juxtaposition of pop and noise makes for a good head scratcher. A good friend pointed out to me earlier that Radiohead is also a band that forces you listen to their albums many times, because the first time you question the experimental stuff. After thinking it over I will probably look forward to listening to this album more over time, and let it grow on me, like a weird fungus. – Jonathan Mendick, Mannerist Zine
