UXA’s Northern Lex
Vans + UXA + Status is proud to present a mixed media exhibition by Peter Huynh.

Known for his experimentation with oversized print-n-snipe street posters. Tiled enlargements to billboard proportions depicting ‘Lex’ the great bear, landscaped over fluidly–hard camouflage patterns denoting rebel contorts. This exhibition features ‘one-off’ prints, U.S. military Mutants X-65 jackets and Vans ‘Lex’ Chukkas’.

Etnies Re-Launches Blog

etnies_blog.jpg

Trying to get your message across to the world is getting easier for skateboarding companies that are smart enough to realize the internet is a great way to deliver said message. Etnies has recently updated their blog with an all new layout and design, so that you can keep track of all the good things they are doing. Etnies, you may have heard, recently signed Ryan Sheckler to a whole new deal that is going to see the company reap the benefits of having one of their main riders on television on a weekly basis. I’m sure sales are huge right now, but that’s beside the point. Etniesskateboarding.com is alive and well, and you can check out their blog at any time.

Something’s Wrong in Seattle

Posted on by sirjorge | +Add a Comment »

skatebarnx.jpgI moved to Seattle from Los Angeles last year in March, and was disappointed in finding out that a downtown skateboard park was dead and buried, so that the city could provide more parking spaces for visitors to the Space Needle and the surrounding complex. In the weeks that would follow, several meetings were held, and calls for attentions were placed in newspapers both far and wide in the City, and no skateboarders seemed to rise up and take a stand. Instead, the community did not rebuild the skateboard park as promised, and for the most part has been on a tirade of closing down skateboard parks, and making sure that skateboarders are not heard. The most recent of events to cast a shadow on the Seattle Skateboard community is the news that the beloved indoor skateboard park, “Skatebarn” is going to be closing down, unless a miracle occurs in a hearing scheduled for March 12th, 2008. If no one comes forward and puts up some serious cash for the massive indoor skateboarding haven, the city will add another skatepark to its number of skateboard related closures. In a city that is so diverse in art, it sure hates skateboarding for some reason. They are quick to build condo’s, close down music venues, and skateboard parks, but are slow to respond when the community needs help. Read the whole story about how the Skatebarn could be here today, gone tomorrow, by clicking here.Seriously, this is getting old fast, in the last year Seattle and the surrounding areas have closed down at least 4 skateboard parks. While there are rumors of a “skate plaza” being built ten minutes from downtown, no immediate plans to replace the downtown skateboard park, have surfaced.

going back to church

I had the chance to go back to the church rail that we did earlier this season, I tried to step it up this time. The snow literally melted out from underneath us as the sesh wore on. Fun one( click images to see larger)

Foot Foot “Trumpet”

Posted on by Mannerist Zine | +Add a Comment »

Foot Foot
Trumpet
Oedipus/Aagoo

Robin Brown’s consoling vocals (which have a certain drone that reminds me of another singer, but I just can’t think of who it is…) on Trumpet steer each song without forcing too many expectations for facets like crescendos or tensions, yet the instrumentalists in this West Coast family band successfully add some interesting layers to almost every track. I’m kind of late writing this review, so I didn’t get into the lyrical depth too much, but I didn’t recognize any annoying argot that could otherwise spoil a good solution for those looking for a Pavement and Scout Niblett concoction. What do I think of Foot Foot? Just good background indie folk music from the living room of the Brown family. Kelly D. Williams, Mannerist Zine

McRad x Frontside Five “50/50 Split”

McRad x Frontside Five
50/50 Split
5Core Records

The search for McRad ends with this archetypal split album featuring deep-end openers Frontside Five. To give you an idea of the aptitude of this album, the first eight songs are dusty punk rock tunes from Frontside Five with names like “Shit Town”, “Thrasher”, and “Who Farted?” The last eleven tracks document the accomplished Chuck Treece and crew lending a buffet of classic skate rock and some irie dub with a nod to Bad Brains. This record is a twinpack of rock not to ignore, yet depending on your verdict; it is either properly diverse or too schizophrenic for those looking for consistency in McRad’s renewal. If you don’t know who McRad is, you better pick up all the old Bones Brigade videos and pay attention. Check out 5corerecords.com for the skinny. Kelly D. Williams, Mannerist Zine

Knife The Symphony “Self-Titled EP”

Knife The Symphony
Self-Titled
Phratry Records

Brutal bass guitar, well-composed vocals, and some tunage that motivates me to be less skeptical of new music. While they don’t venture far from the snowboard-soundtrack-of-the-nineties-punk-rock formula, they manage to avoid the pitfall of such audible monotony. Song number 2 is really good. Track number 5, “An Astronomers Plea” is smart. One of my favorite elements to Knife’s sound is Robyn Roth’s well-placed backup vocals. If this sounds like your deal, I’d recommend picking this EP up.Kelly D. Williams, Mannerist Zine

Various Artists
This Just In, A Benefit For Indy Media
GC Records

Remember when all punk rock compilation albums included at least 30 tracks? What a way for the label to open the floodgates of fury and for the listener to get their money’s worth. The folks at GC Records put together a heavy dose of independent punk rock that will leave your brain smoldering. More than half of these treacherous tracks are unreleased treasures from GC bands like Coleko, Four Deadly Questions, Clarendon Hills, I Farm, Bezerk, and Fleshies. If you’re craving a giftbasket of good punk rock, order this up. Among my favorites is the “Where Eagles Dare” cover by The Wade Brigade. I also highly recommend picking up the collection entitled You Call This Music? from the same label. Kelly D. Williams, Mannerist Zine
